Plaster cast maquette sculpture. Entitled, "Head" (1939). Based marked with affixed catalog label inscribed, "Head, 1939. / Archive 0031384". Accompanied with a catalog description. This is one of two maquettes gifted to Martha Spencer. 13 x 14 x 7.5 cm, 1060 grams. PROVENANCE: Archived under LH195 by the Henry Moore Foundation. Martha Spencer, Hartford. Hence by descent to her daughter Judy Allison, Scorton. Acquired 2017. The catalog description is as follows, "This maquette was given by Henry Moore in 1974 to Martha Spencer who worked on Perry Green (the artist atelier). In 1974 Henry Moore had the intention of giving the works in his atelier (maquettes, works on paper and sculptures) to the Tate Gallery. When that became public a lot of British artists protested because they were afraid that the Tate Gallery would become a Henry Moore Museum. Henry Moore was very upset by this protest and decided in 1974 to donate more than 400 works from his collection to the Art Gallery of Ontario in Canada.
